Rev. Peanut's Dried Chilli Strings
Dried Chilli Strings:
Necessary Items:
Very many chillies.
A needle
A long piece of thread. How long, is a question of a more philosophical nature.
How to do it:
Pick very many chillies from your chilli plants.
Chuck any mushy or damaged ones.
Thread the needle and bring it to the middle of the piece of thread.
Bring the two ends together and close in a knot.
Stick the needle through the stem of the first chilli and pull it down to the knot.
Repeat this procedure until you are bored.
Tie another knot at the other end of the thread.
Hang the chilli string in a bright, well ventilated position allowing air to flow all around it.
The chillies should be fully dried in a couple of weeks and can be used for the rest of the year when fresh chillies are no longer available.
Tips:
If they start to go mushy, chuck ‘em. Probably don’t have enough airflow.
Make separate strings for each variety of chilli. Or mix 'em. You choose.
Dry the chillies as they ripen. Picking them will encourage more fruit.
Plant the seeds of the dried chillies for the following year’s crop. But don’t tell Monsanto.
You can also sun dry them if the climate is suitable. An example of a suitable climate would be my garden. An unsuitable climate would possibly be outside an igloo.
Or you can oven-dry 'em. Stick 'em on a baking tray in an oven at the lowest temperature possible. (Not -273.15 Kelvin. That'd be substantially too low).
