Good things for your dog to munch.

Good Doggie Nutrition:

  • Apples, but not the seeds. The seeds contain traces of cyanide which a dog’s system can’t filter. Apples are good for their teeth and their breath and are a good source of fibre and vitamins A and C. The “A” in vitamin A stands for “Apple”.

  • Eggs. A great alternative source of protein. They also help with digestion and add a certain depth to their farts. I make an omelette with sautéed courgettes. Then I eat it and make another one for the dogs. Chop it up when it’s cooled down and add it to their dinner.

  • Fish, specifically salmon and tuna. Rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Good for their coat and also their dinner jackets and cardigans. Boosts their immune system. I cook Salmon Head Broth every now and again and use the liquid in their evening meal. It’s also a great name for a band. Raw salmon contains a parasite that is harmful to dogs, so always make sure it’s cooked. I give our guys a fish dinner once every couple of weeks.

  • Rice. Very good for digestion.

  • Uncooked bones. Great source of calcium and keep's 'em busy for hours so you can enjoy an interruption free G&T or two. Also helps to clean their teeth.

  • Carrots. Good for their teeth. Low in calories and high in fibre and vitamin A. I add cooked carrots to their evening meal and give them raw carrots as a treat, ‘cos that’s just how I roll.

  • Yoghurt. A good source of calcium and protein and bacteria.

  • Brewer’s yeast. Not baking yeast, which will cause an element of puking. Brewer’s yeast is full of B vitamins and is good for the skin and coat. If your dog has a poor appetite, sprinkle a bit on their food and Bob should pretty soon be revealed to be your uncle.

  • Peas. Again a good source of B vitamins. Fresh or frozen, chuck ‘em straight into their dinner.

  • Peanut Butter. High in protein. A healthy treat. If you give your dog bones, smear some peanut butter in the bone cavity. It’ll keep them occupied for ages.

  • Spinach. Turns your dog into a muscle-bound sailor. High in iron, calcium, omega 3’s and a variety of other goodly items.

  • Green beans. Low in calories but very filling. Our dogs love ‘em.
