Things to avoid stuffing your dog with on account of the fact you love 'em...

Bad Doggie Nutrition:

  • Alcohol. Apart from being an unjustifiable waste, giving your dog alcohol could result in coma or death. And also for the dog.

  • Avocado’s. They contain Persin, which can lead to diarrhoea, vomiting and heart congestion. They’re also a bitch to peel if they’re not ripe.

  • Coffee and tea. Poisonous to dogs. Caffeine causes diarrhoea, vomiting and damage to the heart and nervous system. Also, not having opposable thumbs, dogs find it difficult to hold a tea cup, which can lead to frustration and anxiety.

  • Chocolate. The same goes for chocolate as for tea and coffee, only more so. Eat it yourself. You will feel better and so will your dog.

  • Grapes and raisins. Can cause severe liver damage and kidney failure. Lethal.

  • Mushrooms. In the same way as the wrong mushroom can be fatal to us, so can they be for them. Dogs don’t do psychedelia particularly well. Avoid all ‘shrooms.

  • Onions and chives. One of the most damaging foods you can give a dog. Causes anaemia and damage to the red blood cells. The jury is out on garlic. The poisonous element is present much less in garlic than in onions and some say a certain amount of garlic is actually beneficial. Also protects them from vampires.

  • Macadamia nuts. Another big no-no. Muscular, nervous and digestive problems could ensue. The safest thing is to steer clear of nuts altogether. Except peanuts. Them’s good nuts.

  • Corn on the cob. The corn itself is fine in small quantities, but the cob can’t be digested and ends up getting stuck in the small intestine. Surgery is required to remove it, otherwise it can prove fatal.

  • Milk and dairy products. Dogs are lactose intolerant, and while a small amount of dairy isn’t fatal, it can lead to diarrhoea and rich, flavoursome farts. These farts can cause you to crash if you happen to experience them while driving, so it’s best to avoid dairy.
