Stephen Dyke 19 mins · The goblins have worked well and I presented myself at the sorting office to sign for my copy of the eagerly awaited Cute Hoors CD "Hair like Blood" After a drive round for my lunch break I've had my first and second listens to it and I feel moved to review it already . There's always a chance when a band you love gets back together after 23 years that what's produced will be a pleasant trip down memory lane to recapture your lost youth and not much more . This album delivers so much more than that . The new songs are amazing and at the very high standard I've come to exect from the Hoors . The old songs interestingly reworked proving this band can handle any style of music as we always knew . The rumbustious semi patriotic hymn to Ireland whilst away "What I miss about home" provides a lively opening to an album I already condiser a masterpiece . Followed up by the reworked "Broken Hearts and Dishwashers" which those of us who were lucky enough to be at the Twickenham reuniion gig recall the Neil Young esque guiitar work. The single "You are not my kind" has a real psychadelic 60's feel to it which is carried on by "boys like you" On track 5 my personal all time favourite Hoors Song "Love and Tolerance is given an interesting light jazzy reworking and one of the other best things about this album comes to the fore , the harmonies and backing vocals are really special and really stand out . The title track Hair Like Blood is tight and edgy as can be and I went for lunch at this point . The cafe I was in had the radio on playing airplay crap and I was so looking forward to getting back to the car for Al;so side one .I was chased metaphorically from the caff by the curse of Phil Collins Easy Lover . i was so looking forward to I danced at your wedding , always on of my favourite live tracks back in the day . One of those songs until today I only had preserved on one of the muffle o vision cassette recordings of live gigs I used to do. Boy did this track deliver , really becoming the country classic we always knew it was , with more of those great backing vocals The new song Happy Out had me singing along and making up vocal harmonies the first time I listened to it. Jealous as good as the first time I heard it and thought this is the ur song that I can't believe no one had ever written before. She wrote she did is still as good a song as ever and I do not tire of hearing it . To me the stand out song of the album is the new songh "Your ruining everything " Twangy as a Tarantino theme tune it builds to a great crescendo and an instant classic . There are so many great tunes by this band and a reworking of the nagging fragility of Sweet Bird of Youth is a fantastic way to top off this great album . Basically if you buy one album this year make it this one , its grrreat! P.S I didn't counter the curse of Collins by singing along this time I wanted to keep my head clear for what was to come
